Jean Guide: Find the Perfect Pair of Jeans for Your Body Type

Let’s face it, a great pair of jeans is just hard to find these days. I love denim. It is 100% my go-to item especially in the spring, fall & winter. So, naturally, every season except summer.

I have several pairs of denim, but only a few I wear frequently. I have had a lot of questions regarding skinny jeans & whether or not they will be around for much longer. Here is the thing about what is “in style.” Style comes back, right? For example, you probably never thought that platforms & bell bottoms would have made a comeback, but here they are in FULL FORCE. The thing about style is you need to wear what you feel the best in, and what you feel the best in may not be what is hot or hip at the moment. I wore baggy jeans in the 90’s & was totally the brunt of every joke at my middle school (how old am I? There is a hint in that sentence). Regardless, I tell my clients this all of the time: It doesn’t matter what is “IN.” What matters is how it looks on you and how YOU feel in it. Don’t worry if distressed denim is out of style… if you want to wear it then wear it!

Above I have styled my ALL TIME favorite jean which is linked here. You can wear it casually or dressed up. This style is perfect for rectangle & upside down triangle figures. Alright, let’s talk about what I mean by that; let me explain the core differences in our figures.

Ectomorph:

This body type is generally slim or athletic with narrow shoulders and hips. Though you can probably wear anything, your best fit will be a slim or skinny (if you prefer) and a straight. Brands like Levi’s, Madewell & Citizens of Humanity will probably fit you really well. If you have a bum, try a wide-leg ankle flare (this one is actually my ALL TIME favorite). This may give you the illusion that you have hips. Also, a high waist will become your best friend. Mid rise & low rise may actually cut your figure in half so that you look more rectangular. If you’re tall, try a longer inseam flare.

ENDOMORPH:

This body type includes pear and apple. Try a kick-flare, bell bottom or a skinny cuffed at the ankle. A lot of brands (like below) may also offer curvy fits. These are great for hips! Also, try on a higher waist like these skinny jeans - this will create a waistline while lengthening the line to your hip. Darker colors are always more flattering. I love size-inclusive brands like Good American, Mother & Everlane!

Other things to focus on when looking for denim will be higher waists & larger pockets. Why larger pockets? If your hips are wider than your shoulders (like a pear) then smaller pockets will only emphasize your bottom half. A true denim will have larger pockets, and if you can find something with little to no embellishment, that will be better for your figure. I love Everlane for curvy figures, but you will also be able to wear Kut from the Cloth, Good American & Madewell.

MESOMORPH:

This body type includes hourglass and sometimes pear. Similar to apple, you want to enhance your waistline. Go for a high-waist & you could also try a small kick-flare or bell-bottom. A curvy fit will probably fit your curve better, but if you’re petite, watch where the knee break hits you. You don’t want the denim to be cut too long so the knee looks off-set. Otherwise, brands that you may LOVE will be Good American, Everlane, Hudson & Frame.

Whether you’ve never truly shopped for denim, or you are a habitual buyer, buying denim is not easy. There are so many brands, fits & styles to choose from. I only list brands that I am confident in & have tried on myself. If you have questions about a specific brand, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I would love to offer fit & style advice anytime.
